On June 26th, 2018, the Business Science Institute became a member of the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME). This further reinforces its existing commitment to promoting values such as sustainable development, responsibility and ethics in teaching and research. The audit to obtain the SGS-anti-plagiarism label was held on the 27th and 28th of September 2016, at the Château de Wiltz, under the direction of Professor Jean Desmazes, head of the Business Science Institute’s anti-plagiarism program.

The auditor, Céleste Cornu, issued a favorable opinion; the report highlights the following points:

  • The Business Science Institute has established and maintained its anti-plagiarism program in accordance with the guiding principles for an anti-plagiarism program;
  • It has shown its ability to fight against plagiarism (by its doctoral-managers as well as professors and researchers);
  • It has implemented a prevention program (including a public commitment, human and financial organization, information and training, investigation and sanction process).

On the 28th of September, three doctoral students defended their theses:

  • P. Modou Ndiaye, “Facteurs de risque dans la gestion des projets de développement au Sénégal” [Risk factors in the management of development projects in Senegal].
  • M. Ben Ali, “Evaluation des pratiques d’essaimage dans le contexte de la responsabilité sociétale de l’entreprise. L’expérience de la STEG dans le secteur public tunisien” [Evaluation of swarming practices in the context of corporate social responsibility – The experience of the STEG in the Tunisian public sector].
  • R. Sfeir, “La communication des PME en crise financière, facteur de résilience” [Communication in SMEs in financial crisis, a factor of resilience].

On the 29th of September, a round table with professors from the Business Science Institute took place for the first time. They addressed the topic: “Formuler avec succès un projet de thèse d’Executive DBA” [Successfully formulating an Executive DBA thesis project]. This round table, moderated by Professor Paul Beaulieu, from UQAM, Montreal, was followed by a public presentation of theses by the doctors of the Business Science Institute.

On the 30th of September, doctoral students from different cohorts presented their ongoing work.

The doctoral student manager Hassoumi Assoumana, from the Geneva graduating class 3, met his thesis supervisor, Professor Pierre-Jean Benghozi in Paris, on the way from Niamey (his home) to Wiltz – Luxembourg, where he was going to present his research from the last two years. His research addresses the impact of the telecom regulation authorities on the development and performance of the telecom sector in UEMOA countries.

The Business Science Institute doctoral-student managers benefit from support for the execution of their research projects.

The community of doctoral-student managers pursuing the Executive Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) is organized around the methodological and technical supervision proposed by Professor Jean Moscarola. 

How to mobilize the right sources and collect data, choose the right approach and appropriate sample, and make the databases reveal as much information as possible? How to make the best of the available resources and tools, by choosing the best-adapted collection protocol and analysis? 

Everything happens through remote exchange, based on a project developed with questionnaires, an evaluation grid or a data file. The advice covers the operational implementation and the choice of the most suitable technique in each case. It is not a question of directing the research but rather of ensuring the best possible outcome with the available resources. This can lead to specific technical training or subcontracting work for the implementation of complex functions of the Sphinx software. The advice is offered at an advanced stage of the research and focuses first on the feasibility of the project. If the problematic is unclear, the planned questionnaire disorganized, or the data of poor quality, the researcher is invited to rework the project rather than to risk continuing blindly into a dead end.

Over ten doctoral-student managers have submitted their projects and benefited from the expertise of the professor, before engaging in the operational execution of their research.

For example, an article published by a graduate student has been enriched by a lexical and semantic analysis leading to a typology. Another has developed a documentary analysis protocol allowing him to plan the innovation strategy of industrial SMEs for the following 20 years. The codification is ongoing. A third developed a questionnaire to collect online qualitative and quantitative data. He is currently analyzing the data by building typologies. A fourth was trained to use SphinxQuali to analyze himself the corpus of interviews he collected and then build a thesaurus.

Time has been set-aside during the Luxembourg graduation days to discuss the current projects of the BSI LAB.

Véronique Zardet is Professor of Management Science at the Institute of Business Administration at the University Jean Moulin Lyon, where she directs the EUGINOV (School of Innovative Management) and the ISEOR research center. She is responsible for the Master's program for Research in Socio-Economic Management. She holds a doctorate in Management Science from the University of Lyon.

Along with Henri Savall, in 2001, she was awarded the prestigious Rossi Award by the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences (Institut de France), for their work on the integration of social variables in business strategies. Her research focuses on driving strategic change and the improvement of socio-economic performance in enterprises and organizations, particularly in public services and the health sector.
