Academic partnership

Partnership between Business Science Institute Luxembourg and iaelyon School of Management for the international development of an Executive Doctorate in Business Administration programme.

Business Science Institute and iaelyon School of Management – University Jean Moulin Lyon 3, established a partnership for the joint development of an Executive Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) programme in 2014.

The Executive DBA programme is designed for senior executives and business leaders qualified to MBA level (or equivalent Master’s degree).

This DBA is unique in that it enables experienced business and management professionals to become “doctor-managers” and use their managerial experience to engage in reflection on a subject related to managerial practices at doctoral level supervised by highly-qualified international faculty members. The programme aims in particular to stimulate creative capabilities in the domain of decision-making and strategy implementation.

The Executive DBA differs from a traditional doctorate through its more pragmatic orientation, all the while maintaining a crucial attention to research. As an executive programme, the DBA focuses on the integration of management theory and practice into the workplace to generate impact at personal, organisational and societal levels.

The programme is organised over three phases during 4 years, with five seminars each lasting three days during the first phase, follow-up supervisory seminars, an Impact Seminar and the Certificate of Business Research and Administration during the second phase and the final thesis defence in the third phase supported by further follow-up seminars. During the thesis process, the participants benefit from regular and personalised supervision by a senior academic with expertise in their field of study.

Throughout the programme, students are invited to take part in the Annual International Week at our headquarters at the Château de Wiltz in Luxembourg. The event is a unique opportunity for our students, graduates and professors to gather together for networking opportunities. Certificate and Thesis oral defences also take place during the week in addition to a series of side events designed to support their learning journey as doctoral students.

The Business Science Institute Executive DBA is unique in that students benefit from the experience and expertise of more than one hundred professors from renowned international universities across 5 continents. Business Science Institute runs the face-to-face format of the Executive DBA in 10 countries and has students from over 40 countries enrolled on the online format of the programme. There is currently an enrolment of nearly 200 doctoral candidates representing the widest possible range of public and private organisations.

The partnership marks the commitment of both institutions to collaborate closely, while pooling resources for the benefit of the DBA participants.

In 2014, the former Director of iaelyon School of Management, Jérôme Rive commented: “this partnership is the outcome of the collaboration between two major players in executive education. The DBA is a programme whose format perfectly fulfils the expectations of experienced managers who wish to take a step back and reflect on their own experience while conceptualizing their skills and their knowledge. The traditional doctorate is poorly adapted to these individuals, and an MBA programme does not have the same objectives, nor is it at the same level. The Executive DBA offers an additional track, and a means of strengthening the fruitful connections between academic research and high-level managerial practices.”

Michel Kalika, President of Business Science Institute insists on the importance of the partnership between iaelyon School of Management and Business Science Institute. “On the one hand such a partnership provides academic recognition for Business Science Institute. On the other hand, it allows both institutions to partner to create new programmes that are attractive to international applicants. Finally, it satisfies the demands coming from many managers for whom a DBA is a way to add value to their professional experience and create knowledge.”
