Alain Charles Martinet is Emeritus Professor at iaelyon School of Management, Université Jean Moulin, Lyon 3. For many years, he was invited professor on MBA and PhD programmes in Switzerland (Geneva and Lugano) and in Portugal (Lisbon and Porto).

He co-founded and directed the European Centre for Advanced Training in Management (CEFAG – FNEGE), and the CNRS-certified Euristik Research Laboratory in Lyon, along with a joint PhD programme between the IAE and EM Lyon School of Management.

During his career, he has supervised 50 theses and HDRs and has participated in more than 220 PhD examination panels in France and abroad. He collaborated with the FNEGE for almost 40 years and chaired the AIMS and SFM associations.

Alain Charles is the author of around 100 articles, 10 books and 40 contributions to joint work on management strategy and epistemology, including: Home Strategicus. Capitalisme liquide, destruction créatrice et mondes habitables, EMS, 2022, Epistémologie des Sciences de Gestion (with Y. Pesqueux), Vuibert, 2013 and Encyclopédie de la Stratégie (with F. Tannery, J.-P. Denis et T. Hafsi), Vuibert, 2014/2023. He wrote the chapter on A.O Hirschman in Les Organisations. Etat des Savoirs, J.-M. Saussois (dir), Editions Sciences Humaines, 2nd ed. 2016 and, in Les Grands Auteurs en Stratégie, T. Loilier and A. Tellier (dir), EMS, 2nd ed. 2020, the chapter on H. Igor Ansoff under whose supervision he had worked for three years at EIASM Brussels.

After a graduate background in economics, sociology and business administration, he obtained his PhD in management sciences from the University of Paris-Dauphine in 1975 (under the supervision of Alain Bienaymé). He then passed the 1979 national entrance exam to become full University Professor, before being appointed to the same examination panel twice in 1986 and 2004.

His current areas of interest concern strategic theory, CSR, BoP strategies, governance, multi-actor strategies on territories, pragmatic epistemology and the links between political philosophy, economic doctrine and management.

For 40 years, his research and research departments have focused on clinical approaches within large companies and SMEs. He retains an independent consulting activity in strategy.
