The Executive DBA in 10 key points

Last update: 16.12.2017

1. Why did the Business Science Institute create the Executive DBA program?

This program was created to respond to the demands and needs of experienced executives with MBA degrees (or equivalent) that wish to take a step back from their managerial practices to conduct research and write a thesis that will ultimately be published online.

2. Who validates the Executive DBA?

The Business Science Institute's Scientific Council, which is composed of over 100 international professors who have overseen hundreds of doctoral students and published hundreds of articles and books, establishes the reliability and validity of the program as well as the quality of each thesis that is published online.

In addition, at the end of the first year, doctoral student-managers receive a double Certificate of Research in Business Administration from the University of Technology Sydney and the Business Science Institute. After their thesis defence, they receive the Executive DBA of the Business Science Institute and the DBA of IAE Lyon, Jean Moulin University, where they are also enrolled.

3. What is the length of the Executive DBA program?

Three years: the first year is composed of five face-to-face seminars, taking place over the course of three days (5x 3 days) during which time the the doctoral student-managers are exposed to methodologies and concepts. The second year is devoted to the collection of data under the personalized supervision of an experienced professor from the BSI Scientific Council. The third year is dedicated to the writing of the thesis followed by a thesis defence in front of a jury of professors.

4. What sets the Business Science Institute’s Executive DBA program apart?

  • An exceptional faculty in terms of size, diversity, and quality. The faculty is composed of professors who understand that the foundation of a DBA lies in managerial practice, academic distance, and professional recommendations.
  • Personalized remote follow-up and rapid responsiveness by both the support team and the professors. This also explains the high thesis defense rate.
  • A collection of books based on the theses.

5. What is the cost of the program?

- Face-to-face program, € 20,933 includes:

-  Enrolment in the Business Science Institute (Executive DBA), at iaelyon School of Management – Jean Moulin University (DBA), at Sydney University of Technology, AACSB accredited, (Certificate of Research in Business Administration).

- For the entirety of the three-year program: seminars, personalized follow-up sessions with professors, a digital educational tool kit (software, access to databases, publications, etc.), support in literature research.

Digital DBA (in English), in partnership with SKEMA Business School (EQUIS, AACSB, AMBA Accredited), € 25,000 includes:

-  Enrolment in the Business Science Institute (Executive DBA), at iaelyon School of Management – Jean Moulin University (DBA), at SKEMA Business School (EQUIS, AACSB, AMBA Accredited).

- For the entirety of the three-year program: seminars, personalized follow-up sessions with professors, a digital educational tool kit (software, access to databases, publications, etc.), support in literature research.

6. What is the difference between the Executive DBA of the Business Science Institute and a PhD?

The Executive DBA of the Business Science Institute is based on specific executive managerial experiences, the privileged access to a field where management practices can be observed, and the study of academic literature. As such, managerial recommendations are extremely important. Most importantly, the Business Science Institute aims to support the emergence of a new generation of theses, whereas a traditional PhD is characterized by an exclusively academic orientation. A DBA integrates the experience of the doctoral student-manager, the academic perspective and managerial experiences and recommendations.

The DBA theses are then to be published in the Business Science Institute collection of EMS Publishing.

7. Who is this program for?

This program is uniquely designed for managers who have an MBA (or an equivalent degree) and at least five years of managerial experience. The average age of the 100+ enrolled doctoral student-managers is 46. Managers, business executives, consultants, business school educators and practitioners are enrolled in the program.

8. Does the Executive DBA allow one to become a university Professor?

The program was not designed to achieve this goal. A traditional doctoral degree (PhD) is required for a career in higher education, if this is your objective. However, business schools value profiles that contain managerial experience, an academic perspective, and publications when considering individuals for teaching opportunities or part time positions.

9. What title will I be able to add to my business card should I successfully complete my thesis?

Executive Doctor in Business Administration of the Business Science Institute.
Doctor in Business Administration of IAE LYON, University Jean Moulin.
